I Calanchi, da molti scrittori sono paragonati a bolge dantesche. Il fenomeno erosivo degli agenti atmosferici, tipiche della zona di Atri e del territorio di Siena, sfidano tuttora le tecniche più avanzate, tanto che le moderne risorse nulla possono per arginarli e sconfiggerli. Chiamati "scremoni" sono burroni composti di argilla pliocenica, la cui profondità raggiunge i trecento metri ed oltre, apportando sul fondo chiare colate di fango. La rada vegetazione unita al biancore dei sedimenti, danno al paesaggio un aspetto lunare. Con legge regionale sono stati dichiarati riserva naturale, oggi riserva naturale del W.W.F.

CALANCHI
Calanchi are likened to the Dantesque bolgie. The erosive phenomenon of the atmospheric agents, a typical aspect of Atri  zone and Siena area is still challenging the most advanced techniques which can’t dam and then defeat them at all. “ Scremoni “, as they are called, are precipices made of pilocenic argil reaching more than 300 metres of depth with clear mudflows at the bottom.
The thin vegetation and the whiteness of the sediments give the landscape a lunar appearance.
Thanks to a regional law they are a WWF  natural reserve.
